Missouri Sports Massage Team
Who are we?
We are professional, licensed massage therapists. We work individually, but come together, as a team, in order to provide pre- and post- event massages, for specific athletic events. We are sponsored by the MO Chapter of the American Massage Therapy Association. Many of our team members belong to AMTA, but membership is open to all therapists who are licensed in Missouri. And we have all received training in sports massage techniques.
What are our goals?
- to provide pre and post event massage to athletes of every level
- to become an integral part of the training regimen of elite athletes in Missouri
- to use sporting events to inform the general public about the benefits of sports massage
- to provide advanced education to sports massage therapists

How are funds secured for operation of the team?
We charge $1/minute for our services. We usually offer 15 and 30 minute sessions. However, the MSMT is a non-profit organization which relies on its involvement in local sporting events and on donations to fund its operations. Twenty percent of the funds raised, at a particular event, will go toward the charity that is being promoted at that event. Funds raised beyond those needed for the operation of the team are used to help inform the public of the benefits of sports massage and to help provide advanced education to our therapists.
What do we do at an event?
We set up a work area, near the event site, where we will provide pre- and post- event massage to the athletes. The pre-event massage should occur 30–45 minutes before the start of the event. It is usually a fast paced full body massage, lasting only 15 minutes. It is designed to stimulate your nervous and circulatory systems. The post-event massage should occur 30–90 minutes after the event. This is usually a slower paced full body massage that lasts 15 or 30 minutes. It is designed to sedate your nervous system and to help flush any toxins out of your system. Receiving this massage helps to decrease the severity of soreness felt over the next few days.
