When Governor Mel Carnahan signed House Bill 1601 on July 10, 1998, the state of Missouri became the 27th state to regulate the practice of massage therapy. Since that date the AMTAMO has maintained its presence in Jefferson City and has worked on a number of bills.
One bill created the Missouri State Board of Therapeutic Massage. Regulation of massage therapy was moved to that board and away from the Healing Arts Board.
